Some conclusions
The graph follows the standard 'S' shaped curve, typical of the customer take up of a
new consumer product. It indicates convincingly that in early 2004 practically no
further UK residents are investing in the Internet at home. Many who are already
online are transferring to Broadband connectivity, but very few households are
becoming Internet connected for the first time. And this looks like continuing into the
forseeable future.
The percentage of UK homes connected to the Internet has apparently levelled off
today at close to 50%, well below government targets and the predictions of many
experts over the years. It is a memorable figure. I do not know of any commercial
reason why this might be the case.
